Hello guys,

I am Bryan. Some of you may better know me as 'anavrin' which was my online handle. I've decided to start using my real name on TSL from now on. The main reasons for this is:

1) Its the recognised industry standard for journalists
2) I will literally help build up the names and reputations of our contributors.
3) Using your real name suggests an open and honest approach, where you are accountable and not trying to hide anything.
4) If you have a google plus account it enables Google Authorship. This has the super cool effect of having your photo show up next to your content in search results like in the post below, adding identity to your content. More info how to enable it over here or to make it easier, refer to our guide in the next post.

I do recognise that some may still be apprehensive about using their real name online. Not sure why though, since everyone on facebook uses their real name too!

Anyway, anyone who would like to make this change can simply PM me or post in this thread, and I will change your username for you shortly. That will become your new login user name. Here is a list so far of name changes so regular readers don't get confused.

How to set up Google Authorship

This guide shows you how you can get your articles displaying in google with your google+ profile picture, which helps tremendously in giving an identity to your content and building up your portfolio and rank with google.

Step 1: Make sure you have a google plus account. You can sign up here. plus.google.com/

If you're not sure what it is, it was google's answer to facebook and it has already become the second biggest social network in the world ahead of youtube and twitter. Its backed by google and will only get better over time.

Step 2: After creating your account, note the URL of your profile page. For e.g mine is
plus.google.com/103782582721232624301/

Step 3: Go to "edit your profile" under TSL. Scroll down to the bottom till you see the Social Media section. You can fill up any info you wish to be public but the key field to fill up here is the Google Plus Profile so simply enter your URL then click save.

Step 4: Edit the contributor section of your google profile (plus.google.com/me/about/edit/co) In the dialog that appears, click Add custom link, and then enter our website URL. www.thesmartlocal.com then click save.

After this you should get an email from google to confirm and you're done!

Now you can test real time if it 100% works by going to www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets and entering the url of an article or blog you wrote on TheSmartLocal.

Great success! It works! And soon all your articles / blogs will come up with your profile picture during google searches and you're on your way to developing strong authorship with google! :)

----

Bonus Step: Join our TSL community on google plus here.

Bonus Step 2: Fill up your Author Profile so people can learn more about you!

Bryan! Linked my google+ account already. I think many of us use usernames because of its annoymity. We don't want to be easily identified as our real life persona since we don't really know each other here (bonding needed) and don't want to reveal too much to strangers. But since I guess we're here quite long already, it doesn't matter anymore :D
