A Chocoholic’s Paradise

Chocolate is one of the greatest loves of my life. Something magical happens in The Knolls, one of Capella hotel’s dining establishments every Friday afternoon. The winding hallway in The Knolls is transformed into a chocolate wonderland, as cakes of every colour adorn the stands, and bowls of melt-in-your mouth chocolate deck the tables.

The Capella Chocolate and Tea Experience brings an array of chocolate desserts ranging from cakes to souffles, and a variety of teas from the esteemed Gryphon Tea Company to pair. It’s a high-tea session with a major dose of chocolatey goodness. Here are some of my favourite picks from the line up.

The Buffet

The assortment and arrangement of desserts here are bound to impress dessert lovers. The cakes look beautiful and you can never quite decide if you should stare at them a little longer, or sink your teeth into them.

If you’re looking for Instagram-worthy desserts, look no further because the cakes here will turn your friends green with envy. Some of the garnishes are modeled around an Easter theme, and Capella changes the designs to suit whatever holiday is up next, leading to some really fun-looking cakes.

White Forest

 Dulcey Tart

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_0204-Copy-Copy.JPGDulcey is a magnificent blend of blonde chocolate from Valrhona. The tart shell had a great texture, and the the filling was rich and extremely decadent with buttery notes. I literally licked my lips after taking a bite off this one.

Green Tea

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_0211-Copy.JPGThis cake is made from top of the line green tea from the Gryphon Tea Company’s catalogue. The cake is delightfully light and the flavours come together beautifully with the pungent tea that’s toned down by the chocolate.

 Chocolate Souffle

This notoriously hard to make dessert is also featured in the buffet, but will require some time to prepare. It would be wise to order it the moment you’re seated for the best experience. It’s not my favourite dessert though –  I found it too rich despite its fluffy and light texture.

The creme anglaise sauce was intense and it was overly rich for my tastes. You might want to go easy with the sauce should you order this.

 Tea Sampler

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_0228-Copy.JPGThe Knolls also features an impressive tea collection, but if you have absolutely no idea what to order, you can try their sampler which provides you with an array of 6 teas accompanied with a token sized piece of chocolate.

Stuff your face!

b2ap3_thumbnail_AT6A9641-Copy.JPGI loved the buffet, but it will test your resolve. The items on the line are really rich for the most part, and I had to take quite a few breaks. My advice would be to have an early and light lunch, and come early so you can slowly make your way through the array of desserts.

At $48++ it’s good value considering the lineup and free flow premium tea. Just remember to pace yourself and you’ll have a delightful time here. Act fast, as 24th April will mark the last day of the Capella Chocolate & Tea Experience.
