Apart from being known as a food heaven, Singapore is also known for her ‘King of Fruits’. Nobody can miss the distinctive odour and formidable thorn-covered husk of a durian. Durians bring out extremes in people – you either love or hate it.

If you’re a chocolate and durian lover like many of my friends, you’ve waited long enough for a genius to meld the two together and come out with what Hemelzs Chocolat finally did – Durian chocolate made from natural durians!

About Hemelzs Chocolat

b2ap3_thumbnail_AT6A7628.JPGHemelzs Durian is the only product in the market that offers a 12-month shelf life without the use of preservatives. The interesting thing is how these durian fillings are made from all-natural ingredients without addition of flavors, preservatives or colouring. Yes, it’s real durian and not just the durian flavour.

When I opened the packaging, a whiff of durian fragrance hit me before I could even see its contents. I am not the biggest fan of durians, but I enjoy a few when they are in-season, when durians are of the best quality. I was worried that with chocolates and durians both being sweet, one bite would cause a sugar overload. I was impressed, however, that the sweetness was in moderation. The rich dark chocolate complemented the sweetness of Durian.

65% Dark Chocolate Durian with crunchy cereals Praline

b2ap3_thumbnail_AT6A7668.JPGMy favourite was the 65% Dark Chocolate Durian with Crunchy Cereals Praline. I absolutely love anything with cereals and it adds texture to the smooth creamy durian filling.

65% Dark Chocolate Durian Praline

b2ap3_thumbnail_AT6A7684.JPGThis is similar to the 65% Cocoa Dark Chocolate but without the crunch. It will allow you to fully appreciate the D24 Durian fillings. It is a luxury indulgence with the rich taste of cocoa and durian.

80% Dark Chocolate Durian Praline

b2ap3_thumbnail_IMG_8638.JPGb2ap3_thumbnail_AT6A7657.JPGThe 80% Dark Chocolate overpowers the taste of the Durian Praline- this makes a good choice for those who are looking for something less sweet. If you can’t get enough of the 80% cocoa, don’t fret because it also comes in a bigger tin.

Verdict

Since durian is native to South-east Asia and is popular among Singaporeans, this range of chocolates makes a great gift for those who want to introduce the Singapore culture to their non-native friends. I will not hesitate to let my ang moh friends try it as an introduction to the king of fruits as it looks way less intimidating without its thorny outer husk!

As the festive season draws near, this will also make a perfect gift for those who run out of ideas. With the classy package design, it would make for a thoughtful, creative gift that won’t burn a hole in your pocket.
