About Poulet’s New Menu

Poulet, French for chicken, is a French casual dining food chain in Singapore. It’s one of the fastest growing food chains in Singapore, with an astonishing NINE outlets opened in a mere two years!

After hearing they’ve finally spruced up their menu, I made my way down to Poulet to find out what all the fuss over their roast chicken was about.

Minor food group is the parent company of popular food chains like Thai Express and Xin Wang Hong Kong cafe. They specialise in casual dining, making food affordable to Singaporeans. Their concept at Poulet is simple. To provide good French food at affordable prices.

The Appetizers at Poulet

We started off our meal with entrĂ©es from the new menu, recommended by the staff. We first had the Halibut Goujonette ($9.90) – crispy halibut filet strips served with tartare sauce and a lemon wedge. These lightly breaded fish sticks came in a generous portion that would be an adequate appetizer for two. This is our top appetizer pick from the new menu.

b2ap3_thumbnail_DSC00183-Copy.JPGWe also had the Salad de Canard Fume ($12.90). We were served a garden salad with smoked duck slices and raspberry dressing. The orange wedges and roasted pine nuts lent it a tangy flavour.

Another item on their new menu was the traditional French dish, Ratatouille ($5.90). A classic vegetable stew, it consists of tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini and bell peppers. A good choice for vegetable lovers and for those with a smaller appetite.

The must-try here is still their Truffle Mashed Potato ($5.90) from their existing menu. Smooth and creamy, every spoonful had a light truffle aroma, unlike many places where the truffle scent merely lingers briefly on your food.

The Mains at Poulet

b2ap3_thumbnail_DSC00195-Copy.JPGWe ordered a whole roast chicken to share, drenched in traditional brown sauce with bacon and mushrooms. The Poulet Diane ($30.90) was tasty, but nothing extraordinary. What made it absolutely heavenly was their famous creamy mushroom sauce that you can request on the side – free if you order a whole chicken!

So you have three sauces to choose from to go with your chicken – cranberry, bacon mushroom and creamy mushroom. We highly recommend the last one. If you’re not that hungry, you can order the half chicken which will only set you back by $17.90.

b2ap3_thumbnail_DSC00199-Copy.JPGAnother new item was the Pissaladiere, or “French pizza”! There were 3 flavours to choose from, and we went with the Mushroom Pissaladiere ($11.90) and Pissaladiere de Poulet ($12.90). An open-faced puff pastry slathered in caramelised onion jam, the Mushroom Pissaladiere came topped with olives and button mushrooms, while the Pissaladiere de Poulet was loaded with shredded chicken.

An interesting note is that unlike Italian pizzas, the Pissaladiere is cheese-free!

b2ap3_thumbnail_DSC00187-Copy.JPGb2ap3_thumbnail_DSC00191-Copy.JPGThe Duck Au Vin ($15.90) or braised duck thigh was served with red wine sauce, plus carrots, bacon and mushrooms. The meat was so tender that it fell right off the bone. Although it did not leave a very lasting impression, the meat and tasty red wine sauce were a delicious pairing I would recommend.

The Desserts at Poulet

For dessert, we had the Tiramisu ($7.90), Peach Clafoutis ($7.90), Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding ($7.90) and Crème Brulee ($8.90). The desserts that stood out for us were the Tiramisu and Crème Brulee. The highly recommended Tiramisu was light and not too sweet or rich, and it came in a pretty, Instagram-worthy little jar that could easily serve up to 4 people.

The Crème Brulee was an absolute treat. Caramelized to perfection, it had an equal dose of crisp sweetness and smooth egg custard that did not overpower the palate, even though the portion size was generous. Yes, that was how amazing it was.

Verdict

It’s easy to see why Poulet has been hit in Singapore. Although the roast chicken didn’t meet my expectations after hearing all the good reviews, Poulet still lives up to the hype.

I can see why people used to queue for hours to have their affordable French food. And with all their new outlets opening even in places like Kallang Wave and Changi Airport, the long queues aren’t so much of an issue anymore. Check out a full list of their branches here.
